if you have instability in the knee, get yourself examined by an orhthopaedician and if Acl tear is suspected go ahead and undergo surgery.

The options of treatment: 1) don't do surgery but reduce all your sports activities to bare minimum as your knee is biomechanically unstable..the quadriceps and hamstring has to be strengthened to keep the knee from further injury. 2) do acl reconstruction as there is no other tissue damage so the knee becomes biomechanically stable again and no further damage happens to any thing in the knee and you can start walking in a days time with walker and back to sports in 4 to 6 months time.
