About sustained release tablet

2025-04-23 06:08:28
My brother has been taking Inderal 40 for a year prescribed by doctor. Yesterday when he went to buy the tablet, the pharmacist gave a different brand with the same medicine. Today he saw that it's written "sustained release". Inderal 40 doesn't say "sustained release". Can he take it or should he return it?

Sustained release simply means slow release of the drug over a period of time. You can take it.

It’s important to be cautious when switching brands, especially when it comes to medications like Inderal (Propranolol). While the active ingredient (propranolol) is the same, the formulation may differ, and sustained-release formulations are designed to release the drug gradually over time. This could affect the way the medication works in your brother's system. It might cause a slower or more prolonged effect compared to the immediate-release version. I would advise contacting his doctor or pharmacist to confirm whether the sustained-release version is suitable for him, or if he should return it for the immediate-release form. It's better to be safe, especially when dealing with heart-related medications.
