During an arterial blood gas test, blood may be withdrawn from an artery in the wrist or groin region. Prior to the test, doctor may apply slight pressure to the wrist for a few moments to check if the blood flow is adequate. For patients on oxygen therapy but can also breathe without it, the test may be performed 20 minutes after turning off the oxygen supply.
