Infection of the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder or urethra (parts of the urinary system) is called UTI. It generally causes inflammation of the affected part. Based on the part involved, it is called urethritis: inflammation of the urethra, cystitis: inflammation of the urinary bladder, nephritis: inflammation of the kidney. Although it can affect anyone, it is quite common among females.

The bacteria enters into the urethra through the vagina or anus, usually during sexual activity. This bacteria may get to the bladder. The common bacteria causing UTI are E. coli, N. gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia. Factors which increases the risk of UTI are diabetes, obstructed urinary tract, overweight, kidney stones and history of UTI.

Following symptoms are experience when suffering from UTI: nausea and vomiting - cramps in the lower back and lower part of the belly, mid-back pain,uncontrolled and frequent urge to empty the bladder, pain and burning sensations while urinating, tiredness, fever and chills and presence of pus or blood in the urine.

If you experience any of the symptoms stated above, it is possible that you might be suffering from UTI. A simple urine test can help you confirm the diagnosis. If a repeated infection of the urinary tract is experienced then a doctor should be consulted. Doctor may recommend a urine culture test in such a case.

Simple measures like drinking 2-3 litres of water regularly, maintaining hygiene in the genitals, cleaning the genitals from front to back and wearing undergarments with loose fittings can help you prevent urinary tract infections.
