How to prepare for Circumcision

General preparation:

This method is mostly preferred by the parents of the newborn male child and they will be asked to sign the consent form before the circumcision.

For adults, before undergoing this procedure:

  1. Know all the benefits and risks associated with the procedure.
  2. Tell all the medications and other health care products used by you to your doctor or surgeon.
  3. Talk to your doctor if you use blood thinners such as warfarin, clopidogrel, and aspirin etc.
  4. Inform your doctor if you suffer from any of the diseases that affect the penis.
  5. Follow all the instructions provided to you by your doctor.

Genital preparation:

  1. Before starting the operation, the genital area will be checked and sterile clothes are placed over the body in such a way that only the penis is exposed.
  2. The doctor also checks the penis to be sure that the patient does not have any conditions that contraindicate the circumcision.

Anesthetic preparation:

This procedure is performed with either local, general or regional anesthesia.

For a newborn baby, there are typically 4 methods to use anesthesia and they are:

  1. Application of anesthesia cream to the foreskin.
  2. Application of anesthesia to the dorsal nerve which controls the feelings in the penis [Dorsal penile nerve block].
  3. Injecting the anesthesia under the skin of the penis [Penile ring block].
  4. Injecting the anesthesia directly into the spin which affects the whole body [Caudal epidural block].

In most of the cases, either dorsal penile nerve block or penile ring block methods of anesthesia are used for babies and young boys to perform the circumcision.
For the adults, the dorsal penile nerve block method of anesthesia is used.

Steps of Circumcision

Steps involved in the Circumcision are the following:

  1. The tip of the penis and the foreskin are separated in such a way that the head of the penis is clearly exposed. [This step is performed in young boys only as the tip and foreskin are not separated].
  2. Smegma is removed, which holds the foreskin and tip of the penis.
  3. Then, the foreskin is placed in its original position.
  4. Now, with the help of scissors, the foreskin is cut in a vertical way on the upper side of the penis.
  5. After this, the second slit or cut is made on the underside of the penis.
  6. Then, the foreskin is cut down on the sides of the penis and foreskin edges are pulled back.
  7. The blood vessels are tied off with the help of stitches and the foreskin edges are stitched.

Mostly, Circumcision follows the above steps and few steps may change according to the type of circumcision performed by your doctor.

  2. Some complications such as pain and swelling can be seen for up to 5 days after the procedure. In such cases, pain killers are prescribed.
  3. Wear loose and light clothes for three (3) to four (4) days after completion of the operation.
  4. Consult your doctor immediately if you suffer from severe complications such as heavy bleeding, difficulty in urination and severe pain.

If this operation is done for a baby boy child then the instructions were given to the parents of the child or his caretaker by your doctor.

In most cases, circumcision is a success and in a few cases, only a minute foreskin is present even after the surgery. If you suffer from any of the side effects and complications of circumcision, please consult your doctor immediately.
