An acupuncturist is a professional who is trained in acupuncture (traditional Chinese medicine). Acupuncture is an alternative medicine in which needles are inserted superficially into the body for pain relief, to promote healing and for improvement of mental and physical health.

The acupuncturist inserts needles in the body to stimulate specific points of the body to treat variety of conditions.
The acupuncturist specialises in following treatments
- pain relief in neck pain, back pain, headache, arthritis
- treatment of hypertension, allergic rhinitis, peptic ulcers, nausea and vomiting, sciatica
- treatment of substance withdrawal

A master's degree in acupuncture is required to be an acupuncturist. There are many institutions who offer a master's or residency course in acupuncture which needs to be completed to be able to start providing the therapy.

The acupuncturist diagnoses a condition by
- medical history and signs/symptoms
- physical examination, examining gait, muscle tone, emotional expression, tongue examination
- examination of pulse-rate, rhythm, strength

An acupuncturist doesn't prescribe any medication. He inserts needles in the body to stimulate specific points of the body to treat variety of conditions.
