A urologist is medically certified and trained doctor who diagnoses and treats diseases of the urinary tract in men and women. He can also treat diseases of the prostate in men.

Urologists can treat urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney stones, kidney cysts, painful urinary bladder syndrome, cancer (bladder, kidney, penis, testicles, adrenal or prostate gland), erectile dysfunction in men, infertility, scrotum with enlarged veins, bed wetting in children, blockage of urinary tract etc.

A urologist is specialized in diagnosis and treatment of diseases in the urinary tract which includes kidneys, bladder, uterus, urethra, adrenal glands, penis, prostate and testicles, whereas a nephrologist is specialized specifically in kidney care and kidney-related diseases.

You should visit a urologist if your physician refers you for a urinary tract infection which is not improving on treatment or other conditions of urinary tract which he cannot treat. You can directly visit a urologist if you see symptoms like blood in urine, urine leakage, pain in the pelvic area, pain or burning sensation while urinating.

A urologist can treat pelvic pain in females in association with a gynaecologist but can not treat female reproductive system-related diseases. He can treat diseases like UTI, dribbling of urine, etc.
