1. What is an ovarian cyst?
Ovarian cysts are small fluid filled sacs formed either inside or on the surface of ovaries.
2. What symptoms are associated with cysts in the ovaries?
Most of the cysts are asymptomatic and small. But if associated with symptoms they usually cause pain or swelling in the lower abdomen, pelvic pain, pain during intercourse, unusual vaginal bleeding, backache, weight gain and painful periods. If the cyst ruptures, then there is a sudden and severe pain.
3. What are the causes of ovarian cysts?
Causes of ovarian cyst are sometimes due to hormonal problems which lead to the formation of functional cyst or due to drugs taken for ovulation. Endometriosis also causes cyst to form called endometrioma in which endometrial tissue is attached to the ovarian surface and are painful. Sometimes some pelvic infections can also cause cyst formation.
4. Is it possible to conceive if I have an ovarian cyst?
Yes, it is possible to conceive if you have ovarian cyst but the illness like endometriosis can cause difficulty in conceiving which can give rise to cyst formation; hence one needs to treat the illness first.
5. How will the doctor diagnose a cyst in the ovary?
Ovarian cyst can be diagnosed by doing an ultrasound to check for location, size and shape of the cyst. Hormonal levels are checked to see if it is related to hormonal abnormalities. Ca125 test is done to rule out cancer if cyst is seen in post-menopausal woman. Pregnancy test is also performed to confirm or rule out pregnancy.
