1. What is a BERA test?
BERA is an otoneurological test that examines the auditory, brain function in response to the sound stimulus. It is possible to estimate the rate of passage of the nerve impulse through the auditory nerve with this test.
2. How long does the BERA test take?
The BERA test takes about one to one and a half hours. Still, the entire appointment takes about two hours without anaesthesia and up to four hours if the child needs anaesthesia (including the recovery time). Children of age seven and above can be tested while they are awake.
3. Why is BERA test performed?
Brainstem evoked response audiometry test, also called as BERA, is a simple, objective test that identifies hearing impairment in babies and children. It is a test that examines the hearing function in response to the sound stimulus.
4. Is BERA test and EEG the same?
In EEG, the electrical activity of the brain is measured. BERA also measures the electrical activity of a part of the brain, but here, the waves formed are highly time-specific (waves appear in BERA after a specific time after sound stimulus).
5. How is the BERA test performed?
The person is made to lie back. Stimulus is given in the form of a sound or tone via a headphone. The waveforms of impulses are produced at the brainstem. These waveforms are recorded by the electrodes placed over the scalp at different places. Various readings are recorded in different positions and polarities. The waves recorded are then sent for interpretation.
