Positional vertigo (BPPV) occurs when tiny
calcium crystals in the inner ear become displaced and move into the balance canals. When the head changes position, these crystals send incorrect balance signals to the brain, causing a brief spinning sensation. It can occur without any obvious reason, but aging, minor head injury, viral ear infections, prolonged bed rest, or inner ear disorders may increase the risk. Stress and lack of sleep do not directly cause BPPV, but they can make the symptoms feel more frequent or severe.
Next Steps
If symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or associated with hearing loss, severe headache, weakness, or numbness, further evaluation by an ENT specialist or neurologist is recommended.
