Why do i feel difficult to breathe while sleeping

I am a 68 year old lady, retired. Since the last 2 months I am having difficulty in breathing on and off. Now this is happening at night too. Why would I feel difficult to breathe while sleeping? Is there some disease which is progressively increasing? How do I correct this problem?
