Hi,
So as per the history you are giving , it appears that your mom may be suffering from ‘adenomyosis’. Since the bleeding is so severe it has lead to anemia (low hemoglobin). These are the cases it may be indicated.
Also understand that the uterus has main 2 functions in the body , child bearing and to have cyclical bleeding ( menstruation ).
Uterus itself is not secreting any hormones in the body.
So removal of the uterus is fairly non complicated surgery.
Side effect depend on the skill of the surgeon but may be divided in immediate and late side effects.
Immediate side effects or more precisely complication can be excessive blood loss, injury to bladder (1:1000) injury to bowel , rarely injury to ureter.
Late side effects are practically none of surgery done right.
There is no correlation of the uterus removal with either weight gain, knee pains, cataracts ,
diabetes/ BP / Cholesterol problems.
It all depends on how u follow up your post operative period.
We at our center resort to early ambulation and early diet and give a post op care in a way that patients usually don’t have such issues if followed properly.
