Ultrasound procedure doubt

2022-02-18 02:53:47
Dear doctor, I have a query on the ultrasound of neck. I can feel movable lymph nodes on either sides of back neck but in the ultrasound scan, the report says no significantly enlarged lymph nodes in the neck found. Recently, I feel pain around the lymph node and neck area. During the scan procedure, the radiologist moved the transducer in the sides of the neck but not till the back of neck. My doubt is, if all the palpable lymph nodes would be captured during ultrasound procedure even if the transducer is not moved till back of neck. Request you to please clarify my doubt. Have attached x ray which was taken for neck pain.

I don't want to go into whether the probe should be moved around the neck, or, what you are feeling in the back of the neck area really lymphnodes or sebaceous cyst. If you can nicely feel those swellings then surely your Clinician will also be able to feel/see those lumps. Please bid for getting FNAC from one of those lumps. You can discuss with your Clinician Doctor or your Pathologist.

It’s not very common to miss enlarged lymph node in usg. Anyway thorough clinical examination is necessary to rule out posterior neck masses which can be sometimes missed on usg neck..!

X ray will not pick soft tissue lesions like enlarged lymph nodes. The ultrasound probe needs to to moved/ applied over the area where u feel the palpable nodes to pick up the nodes. U can get a repeat ultrasound and specifically tell the sonologist to image the area where u feel the nodes are.
