Toothache due to broken tooth under gum

A canine tooth broke inside the gum some 6-7 years ago. I visited the dentist and he advised to let it remain there as at that time it was not causing any trouble. Indeed it never caused trouble for so many days and since the dentist had rubbed the surface of the tooth a little so that it never touched the teeth above. But now, it has again started to shake and thus causing pain. I am unable to chew from that side of my mouth.

Although we cannot judge the actual clinical situation of the tooth by your description, but if the tooth is mobile now, then extraction seems to be the only appropriate treatment option. We will be able to provide you a more rational opinion if you can post the clinical picture of the affected tooth as well as x-ray of the same. Please don't wait for the symptoms to aggravate and you should seek treatment for this problem immediately. Regards.
