The thyroid is an organ which is present in all human beings. It might produce more thyroid hormone (hyperthyroidism) or less thyroid hormone (hypothyroidism). To figure out which problem you have, the TSH is a good initial investigation. If it is elevated, then you have hypothyroidism and if it is low, then you have hyperthyroidism.
