Surgery confusion
My wife is having an umbilical hernia. The general surgeon suggested an open surgery to remove this hernia. As a procedure she underwent ECG and ECHO test before the surgery for hernia. But ECHO results show my wife is having a LARGE OSTIUM SECUNDUM ASD (28mm) in her heart. So the cardiologist suggested doing the heart surgery first but the general surgeon suggested doing the hernia surgery first. Now we are confused. Kindly advise. Thanks.
She is already late for the heart surgery. The ASD has been there since birth but she may not have had any symptoms; so probably it went undiagnosed till now. But the earlier it is closed, the less risky it is; as it can lead to severe heart complications later. So if the umbilical hernia is not obstructed or painful; it is better to close the ASD first. It can also be closed by cardiologist without open heart surgery IF the structure of the ASD is favourable.
