Hello,
Impaired sleep or insomnia could be primary which means it is not related to any other cause. Most of the cases of insomnia are secondary, which means that they are related to some medical, mental health, or psychologist causes. Hence the symptoms mentioned by you here would require an assessment to understand the attributes of the situation and problem. Hence my suggestion for you would be that please seek a consultation with a psychiatrist near you for comprehensive assessment. Also sleeping pills can be habit forming and long term use is not recommended, and specifically when it is self medication. All of these are more than reason enough for you and your spouse to seek a consultation. Some medication and sleep related psychotherapy can help your spouse.
Hope this helps you. Best wishes for your health and future.
