Tryptomer belongs to a particular class of antidepressants called tricyclic antidepressant which are prescribed for range of problems like depression, pain, sleep etc. Its prescription depends on the balance of risks and benefit. Like you have mentioned it does produce some side effects like sedation, blood pressure fluctuations, dry mouth, constipation etc. Long term prescription on a low dose is usually safe.
