My GP diagnosed me with a hernia weeks ago. It was slightly painful at the time but now it's severely painful. I am also being sick and generally feel very unwell.

Mostly hernia is a surgical condition. If you find, its paining more better consult a surgeon and evaluate the current status of that hernia. Do not expect the condition to resolve by itself, it won't.
