If your retainers are permanent, they are normally bonded to the back of your teeth. While 3 years is the minimum you should wear your retainers, keeping them permanently is a better option, especially if recommended by your orthodontist. Since you had a gap between your teeth, chances of relapse in the future are possible. (Especially in women, pregnancy, menopause and other hormone related conditions also affect gums and may show tooth movement).
