Removing an implant after 8 years is not adviceable, unless you have some problem with it. There will be a lot of bone growth around and over the metal implant. Also removing the metal will leave lots of gaps in the bone. If the metal is being removed to undergo further surgery then it is a different aspect. The reasons to remove metal implant will be either due to a complication form the metal which cannot be dealt with in any other way or if a further reconstructive surgery is being planned. Implant can be removed after two years or one year depending on the site.in your case it is already 8 years. It usually doesn't cause any problem. If there is persistent pain in hip, removal can be done now.
