Reddish and swollen eye

My son is 3 yrs old. His left eye was jammed due to some discharge. I cleaned it for almost 15 mins using a cotton towel soaked in warm water. Only then he could able to open it. It was swollen too. Both corners were slightly red. Not sure if it is giving him pain as he couldn't convey it. Please help.
