Pneumocephalus occurs after trauma in 2 ways. 1. If there is a fracture of the skull along with a breach of skin over the fracture ( Compound skull fracture) and 2. Fractured skull which breaks the walls of sinuses or roof of nose.
Generally pneumocephalus is self limiting. It resolves in few days.
Cases where there is also a leak of clear fluid from the nose (CSF) may develop recurrent pneumocephalus. They also carry risk of infections.
Warning signs: leak of clear fluid from nose, Severe headache, High fever with neck stiffness.
