As u said  swelling and pain - did she fell down ? Heavy object liifting or forceful turning of tap or non? As she is diabetic , pain can be due to peripheral neuropathy ( nerve of hand and feet get inflammed - lead to pain ) Get her , - Cbc , ESR , CRP - to rule out infection - Vitamin d , vit b12 and calcium level check . - Sr creatinine  and electrolyte level checked 2nd) XRAY for left wrist with hand Ap view and lateral view 3rd) EMG / NCV test for both upper limb  - this to test her nerves are working well any obstruction or compression is there on this nerves
