It is a good sign you realised that you want to be self supporting to handle your life. In this context, you need to take the first step to go and assessment of the past about what you lost and the reasons for those causes and their effects.
By learning from those mistakes, see where you are now existentially which will help to you plan your goal setting for future. Based on those goals you make appropriate decisions and execute the same.
