I also encourage intercourse on alternate days. Because it gives enough time for production of adequate no. of spermatozoa and more importantly for their maturation during unhurried transport through epididymis. This increases the chances of pregnancy.
A woman's cervix (neck of the uterus) stores spermatozoa in small pits within it (cervical crypts) and continually release them in batches into the uterus (like time-release capsules), so that no matter whenever the egg is released there are always several sperms readily available to fertilize. This is a wonderful arrangement by nature. All this works only from a few days before ovulation to a day or two after ovulation.
So go ahead and follow your doc's advice.
Make sure your wife is not breastfeeding the first baby, not even occasionally.
