I understand your concern. Living with recurrent abdominal pain for several years without a clear diagnosis can significantly affect your quality of life.
I would recommend consulting a gastroenterologist, preferably someone experienced in managing Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other functional gastrointestinal disorders.
IBS is a disorder of gut–brain interaction. It is usually diagnosed based on characteristic symptoms and clinical assessment, using the Rome IV criteria, rather than through one specific confirmatory test.
However, since your diagnosis was made several years ago without a detailed evaluation, it would be advisable to reassess your condition and exclude other possible causes of chronic abdominal pain.
Depending on your symptoms and examination, your gastroenterologist may recommend investigations such as CBC,
CRP, celiac screening, stool tests, or other investigations. Colonoscopy is not routinely required for IBS unless there are warning signs or another clinical indication.
The reassuring part is that IBS can often be managed effectively. Although there is no single permanent cure, appropriate dietary modifications, medications, stress management, and symptom-specific treatment can substantially improve quality of life.
Please understand that repeatedly taking pain-relieving injections or tablets during severe episodes is not an ideal long-term management strategy without establishing the cause.
I would like to know a few additional details:
1. Where exactly do you experience abdominal pain?
2. Is the pain associated with passing stools or changes in bowel habits?
3. Do you predominantly experience constipation, diarrhoea, or both?
4. Have you experienced weight loss, blood in stools, fever, or pain that wakes you from sleep?
These details will help determine whether your symptoms are consistent with IBS or require further investigation.
My advice is not to continue suffering with an uncertain diagnosis. A structured evaluation and individualized treatment plan can make a significant difference.
