Needle Biopsy Risk

2022-07-14 14:31:18
I have a soft tissue attenuating lesion 3 cm.. The pet scan for it came Metabolic Active.. So they referred us to oncologist but he denies treatment until we get a biopsy of that particular mass.. They are asking for a biopsy but location of lesion is hard to get so CT scan guided needle biopsy has been said to be done.. but then again the doctor is saying it is very risky and pneumothorax could happen.. and left the decision on us.. Is there any other way out? I don't understand even for a sample I have to take so much risk? Please help 🙏

For the oncologist to start treatment the type of tumor should be identified and staging should be done. Since I haven’t personally seen the imaging I wouldn’t be able to tell if an image (CT) guided biopsy or a bronchoscopic biopsy would be possible/better. Now we’ll have to trust your doctor who has seen the imaging and asked for a CT guided biopsy. And yes a pneumothorax can be expected in such cases since we’ll have to put a needle through the normal lung. But mostly it would be a small pneumothorax that gets absorbed by itself or with high flow oxygen supplementation which they would give at the hospital. Even if it is a slightly bigger pneumothorax than expected, there’s treatment for it. I’d suggest you trust your doctor for now and go ahead with his or her advice. But again ultimately it the patients choice and we can only give options.
