Nail blackening on sides

There's some nail blackening on the sides of mom's nails. It's been like a month now & it has been like that. I am guessing it's some fungal infection, but I am not so sure about it. Picture added in attachment. It's not dirt, I am pretty sure about that. So it has to be something else.
