Liver SGOT and SGPT High

2017-03-26 11:12:28
I had recently undergone a medical check up where the records showed higher than normal values for AST/SGOT and ALT/SGPT. AST/SGOT : 354 ALT/SGPT : 78 I drink alcohol very rarely (once in 3 months) May I know the seriousness of this issue? Does this indicate any serious damage to my liver? What are the tests I need to undergo for further diagnosis? How common is this? Any help is hugely appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Certainly liver function test is abnormal. You need further evaluation. The causes can be self limiting like any intercurrent viral illness or fatty liver or may indicate other liver problems. I would suggest - repeat liver function test(LFT) , USG abdomen, PT with INR, HBsAG and HCV,CBC to begin with. Then show it to a gastroenterologist, who would advice accordingly. Don't worry too much till a diagnosis is made. It may not be a major problem after the test reports.
