Patellofemoral syndrome would be pronounced when straightening the knee, going down stairs.
With patellar tendonitis it need not be as clearly painful when doing the movement but is after it.
However if the knee feels unstable and swelling is greater (ACL) then it feels like the knee is going to collapse. Other ligament injuries are along the sides, may not be the area of injury...
