Knee pain when climbing stairs

While walking I use to get knuckle burst sounds and couple of months ago I started practicing tennis is when I got knee pain. I have given that practice a pause as I feel it is hurting me while play. last weekend I have been to a shopping mall and was using stairs; when I felt real pricking pain in both knees. Please advise next steps to diagnose.
