Suffering from pain due to a kidney stone. The USG report reads "Left kidney is normal in size measuring 10.45cm *5.1cm. Parenchymal thickness and exotexture are normal. Mild degree of hydronephrosis . A calculus of 16mm size is seen at the PUJ" What is the recommended procedure in such a case? Should we consider going the lithotripsy route ?

You can certainly consider the lithotripsy route (eswl) provided density of the stone is less, stone location not in lower calyx with accepted risk of retained fragments requires another session of eswl or ursl. Attach CT scan report mentioning housefield units and film to look for pcs anatomy for favourable factors.

1.6cm stone should be addressed with surgical procedure. It is either PCNLor RIRS . Both are equally good. U need consult a urologist to discuss with the options. ESWL can also be considered which is noninvasive but stone should be soft for this procedure.
