Itchy areola is a common problem, usually due to constant rubbing of the bra against the nipple, especially if an ill fitting bra is used or a woman goes for jogging or other physical activity without a bra. It can also be due to an allergy to a bra made of some synthetic material. The treatment lies in local cleaning with soap and water , keeping the bra moist by use of lanolin or aloevera gel.
In some cases it can be fungal infection , to be treated by dusting with clotrimazole powder.
One serious condition that can present with similar symptoms is Paget's disease of the breast. For this reason it is better to consult a Doctor first rather than going for home remedies. You should consult a Dermatologist or a General Surgeon.
