About 2-3 weeks after getting infected the patient would develop fever, weakness and swelling of lymph  glands which subside gradually. You can go in for HIV rapid diagnostic test(RNA) or pro- viral DNA test which detect the virus at an early stage. Yes you will need a doctor's prescription.
