Greetings. Such presentation is usually non-specific but very rarely can be associated with a condition called subungual melanoma which needs serious treatment. The problem is with clinical examination and even using a dermatoscope, the accuracy of diagnosis is doubtful and it do not rule in or rule out melanoma. You can either wait and have a periodic follow-up with the same dermatologist and document findings or proceed for a nail biopsy. It will be very comforting to know the diagnosis and will help to make precise treatment plan. Sometimes after a consultation and biopsy, active treatment may not be needed but periodic follow-up is all that may be necessary. Do not delay the consultation.
