How long does it take to pass a kidney stone

Hi my husband is 43 year old, he has kidney stone and is very painful especially while passing urine. 3 years back he had it and we did lithotripsy. This time the doctor has given some medicines and has suggested to wait and let it pass naturally since the size of the stone is very small. Please guide how long does it usually take to pass a kidney stone.
