Hair loss scalp visible

I almost lost my hair 8 years back within 1 month.. the hairs which I have now have neither increased or decreased.. I had used minoxidil prescribed by doctor I discontinued without consulting doctor.. what thing I suffer from? Please tell whether I could regain my hair back
