First time sex

I and my girlfriend are both 19 and have decided to have sex. It's the first time for both of us and we are very anxious to make it absolutely safe. I am going to use a condom, but we want to be more sure. Is it okay to use an emergency contraception like an iPill after a protected sex? Also, I guess the day will be in the middle of her cycle so she would be at high risk. We were to intimidated by all that could go wrong and so had delayed it so much. But now that we are finally going for it, I really want everything to be safe.
