Feeling choked while Coughing

My father has a choking/suffocating feeling while coughing. This is happening daily. A few days ago he had cold and cough for which the doctor had prescribed antibiotics and the symptoms resolved in two weeks. Please suggest what to do to relieve this choking. No other symptoms as such but he is getting tired after walking with heavy breathing.
