Ear infection

I got my daughters ear pierced during the month of October by a dermatologist . Everything was fine for 3 months. A week back when we changed her earrings to a new one, the area around the piercing got infected with pus and was bleeding. We kept the earrings for 1 week but even after that the infection did not improve. We removed the earring. I want to know why did the piercing got infected and when will it cure. When can we put the earrings back on? I can see the piercing already closing.
