Diabetic retinopathy

My mom has been diagnosed with cataract as well as as Diabetic Retinopathy. There are conflicting views from docs on which ailment is to be attacked first. Pls advise whether Cataract surgery should be done first or the retinal correction. Also whether IV can be used for treatment over laser surgery. Lastly what should be the interval between Cataract and retinal surgeries. Thank you. Ramesh Nayak.

It's always a dicy condition but always better to have cataract operated first to get a clearer vies for retinal procedures like lasers PRP, Inj Avastin etc..another advantage being any surgery like cataract requires physician fitness and glycemic control, as physician controls glycemic element well, the chances of progression of diabetic retinopathy reduces further so Cataract first s better.

Hi, Both can be treated simultaneously. if the grade of cataract is more then it is advisable to undergo cataract surgery first followed by retina treatment. if retina is severely impaired then retina management can be done first. But generally cataract surgery followed by retina treatment is preferred. Whether laser or intravitreal inj will depend on severity of diabetic retinopathy. this is determined on basis of clinical examination and certain diagnostic procedures like OCT,FFA.
