No. Type 2 diabetes does not always progress to diabetic kidney disease, diabetic retinopathy, or diabetic neuropathy. These are long-term complications that develop mainly due to prolonged poor glycemic control, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking, obesity, genetic susceptibility, and longer duration of diabetes. Many patients who maintain good blood sugar control (target HbA1c as appropriate), healthy lifestyle habits, regular exercise, blood pressure control, and routine follow-up may never develop these complications or may develop them much later in life.
Next Steps
Maintain regular monitoring of HbA1c, blood pressure, lipid profile, kidney function, and urine albumin. • Annual retinal examination and foot examination.
