We all have a limited attention span to focus on anything. If you force your mind beyond this span, it starts getting drifted in all directions.
Your attention span also depends on the work you are doing. If you are enjoying your work, your mind loves the engagement with the work and never gets distracted. The time just flies as you can focus for long period.
However, if you donât like what you are doing, you have to constantly force your mind on the task at hand. Your mind, like a naughty child, keeps moving from one place to another. You keep chasing your mind like the mother but canât hold it for long.
When you donât like your work, everything else seems to you much more important than the task in hand. It is because you are seeking relief from the suffering of doing an uninteresting, boring and tortuous work.
Let me suggest you some techniques which might help you in reducing distractions and focus your mind.
1: Fix A Schedule
You must have fixed schedule for studying. You must not allow yourself to break the schedule just because you donât feel like studying. You must allow some gap between your studies to do the things which you like. It helps you charging your batteries and changing your mood.
I get charged by watching music channels, listening old songs and even reading the updates of the profiles of my friends and family on Facebook. You can use yours.
2: Changing the Subject
Even the most interesting thing gets boring when pursued for long. Variety is the spice of life. When you are losing your attention, you must change your subject. If you are studying physics and getting bored why not start solving maths problems and get charged. May be literature is better for you.
3: Eliminate Diversions
I have switched off all notifications from my apps and I always keep my mobile on silent mode when I am doing something important. I make my calls and see my emails, Facebook, Quora or any other apps only when I am free. These activities help me changing my mood for better.
4: Best Things Last
What do you do, if you are served a verity of food, some are tasty and some are not, and you have to eat all the food?
If you eat the choicest food first, you would find the tasteless food even more tasteless and you would not be able to finish it later. However, if you start with the tasteless food first, you can always switch to the tasty food later and complete your dining with best food. You can use the same principle in studies.
When you are in the best mood, start with the most difficult subject. You will be able to make the best progress there. When you get tired from it, switch over to the subject which you like and find interesting. Your mental tiredness would disappear instantly. Once you are charged fully, you are ready to go for the tough subject once again.
5: Relax and Sleep
I have found small doses of sleep extremely rejuvenating. When you donât feel like doing anything, just close your eyes and relax for sometime. It would be a good idea to take a small nap after the lunch. A small dose of sleep charges you and recharges your mood. I personally find a small walk very relaxing and mood altering.
Once you have relaxed well, you are ready for the work again with new energy and vigour
