I had a mastoidectomy with tympanoplasty 4.5 months ago and a patch placed about 2.5 months ago. My doctor reviewed me last week and confirmed that everything has healed completely.
I mentioned that I occasionally hear a brief “sssh” air leak sound sensation in the operated ear when I yawn or burp. And that sound is coming only during yawning or burping. Other than that no such sound. My doctor said this sensation is completely normal and healthy.
Is that actually normal? If it is a normal and healthy sensation, why don’t I experience anything similar in my non-operated ear?
Because the new tympanic membrane which is grafted may not have the exact same properties as the original one.
Eustachian tube opening and closing may cause such sounds.
