Astigmatism in 7 yr boy

My 7 year son has astigmatism. We consulted two doctors one told that his number is 2.5 cylindrical. Another said 2.25 and told me to bring him again after pupil dilation. My query is - is pupil dilation necessary to find accurate number. Is pupil dilation safe. Does it cause any uncomfort to child. As he is to be dilated 2 hours before checkup.

Pupil dilatation is necessary specially in children as there accommodation is very strong. It is usually very safe, Unless the patient has a history of seizures (fits). In that case cyclopentolate has to be avoided.

Yes , pupil dilatation to check number is called Post Mydratic test ..and it is more accurate than without dilatation. It just causes blurred vision for a few hours , other than that it's harmless.
