I want to share my medical story here since anyone can be at my place and this incident might prove helpful to any individual.
Last year I went outside India for work purpose. After a few months I started to develop red rashes throughout my arms and legs. I thought its just a minor skin infection and did not pay much heed as I was in a foreign land. When I returned back to India, within a few days started to develop slight back pain and then I decided to go to an Orthopaedic doctor. He saw my MRI reports and adviced me to undergo a minor surgery since I had osteomyelitis which had led to puss formation. Got operated and took all the required post operative antibiotics for 10 days. I started to recover and feel much better.During operation all the required tests were done including AFB culture, AFB smear, Histopathology etc and were negative. But the TB PCR showed I had MDR TB (very low).
Taking the advice of my Ortho doctor, I went to consult an Infectious Disease Specialist and then he started my ATT treatment seeing the TB PCR in which low MDR TB was detected. I had to take around 15 tablets in a day , all heavy dosage antibiotics, and hence started to get pukish feeling, dizziness, breathing difficulty, joint pain etc which were all the side effects of this treatment. Initially we went to the doctor every week and then consulted him biweekly but my condition was staying the same. The treatment continued for 3 months but my condition was deteriorating every passing day. I thought of consulting another doctor since these medications were doing no good and I was losing faith in myself. Then I found Dr Nishit on Practo and consulted him with all the prior history and investigations. He heard me patiently, understood all my problems .
He advised me to immediately stop ATT and get MRI, blood and TB PCR test done again. All the reports came and it seemed all fine. I had no TB. He explained me that TB PCR is very sensitive test and can detect some other bacteria also which may result in positive report. The reason for osteomyelitis was found that my skin infection has spread to my back bone due to a small injury which I ignored before.
He told me that ATT medicines should be started only after being clinically confirmed too.
The day I stopped those medicines I started to feel that I got my life back. No vomiting, no dizziness, no body pain, everything stopped.
I started moving around like before. I got a new life.
Dr Nishit advised me some multivitamins to be taken so that they can reduce the adverse effects of ATT. The ATT was damaging my liver also.
Its almost more than a month and I am back living my normal life.
I am so thankful that I consulted him and he took such an adverse decision to stop ATT in middle after confirming it from all ends . But it all worked out so well and now I am recovering quickly back to being a healthy individual.
Thank you Doctor. Read less
