Vaccinated Pet dog bite
My pet dog who gets vaccinated every year for rabies and is in a healthy position bit my husband on the jawline. We immediately got bandage and injection for pain and tetanus.
It has been 12 hours since the bite, should we get rabies vaccination too ? Or should we skip it since our dog is already vaccinated and in healthy condition.
The doctor whom we consulted didnt force us to get the rabies vaccination and prescribed few medicines for pain and infection as of now for five days. Kindly suggest what to do? Should we get the rabies injection or not ?
1. No vaccine is 100% effective. Neither the vaccine given to the dog, nor the one which is taken by humans against dog bite
2. Rabies is untreatable disease. If contracted it has 100% mortality.
3. The wounds on head, face and limbs are graded as severe grade 3 bites.
4. There is no harm in taking antirabies treatment even if the dog is not infected.
5. The symptoms of rabies in a dog, may be manifested even after 7-10 days of contracting the disease, but it May transfer the disease much before that.
Keeping these facts in mind, I would recommend vaccination to all the patients with h/o dog bite
