Umbilical hernia -small lump above navel

My son(3 Yr 9m) has a small lump above navel when consulted doctor told that it was an umbilical hernia and needed surgery , it doesnt give him any problem so far. can we wait so that there is some possibility to close on its own.I cannot sleep or feel good whenever I think about this. Please en-light me it would be a great help
