Swelling in hands near wrists

My Mom has some nerves problem in her hand and her hands are swelling. In my area we only have an orthopedic doctor and he is prescribing antibiotics and pain killers and calcium tablets for her and says it is not bone related problem.it is just nerves related problem.Just take these pain killers and it will be fine.My mom being uneducated has been taking those tablets for the past 6 years now and the situation has only worsen.What should be done now?Please help!!!!
